Perspective on Brain Death in Korea

Abstract
In Korea "Brain Death"(BD) has not been accepted legally yet and there is no statute on "definition of death" or "criteria for determination of brain death"
The ad hoc Committee on Study of Brain Death of the Korean Medical Association (KMA) drafted a proposal on the above mentioned problems and it requested legal procedures to the Ministry of Public Health and Welfare in 1990.
Several public opinion polls show the trend for brain death acceptance by general public which is increasing in number recently.
There have been several cases of organ donations from BD donors with the informed consent of next of kins, i.e., several kidneys, two livers and one pancreas for transplantation which was successful in all cases since 1988.
The number of multiorgan donations by BD donors are increasing recently.
